Murphy or Bad Programming

It was one of those two — probably the latter — that led to me writing a program that takes a bunch of time to crank through and generate data, and then dies when it cannot open the file to write the data into.

Do it Myself House Project

I am in the process of thinking about a project on the house, and am interested in any help that anyone wants to offer. I’ll accept help ranging from “You’re crazy to even think about doing that yourself” to “Let me/us know a date and we’ll come by and take over” and anything useful in between.

If the handyman husband of one of Tara’s co-workers hadn’t moved to Oregon, I’d think about hiring him to work on this. Last spring he and a friend took out our useless pool deck and replaced our shed. But, as I said, he is now in Oregon and out of reach.

Project Description

Working Late

Here it is, nearly 4:30 on a Friday and I’m still at work. Normally, I leave between 3:30 and 4:00, especially on Fridays — being New Mexico born and raised, Fridays are supposed to be on 3/4 days anyway.

I was a few minutes away from leaving, when our build team leader informed me that he’d been asked to do a build that didn’t follow our build processes (or any sane process for producing code that goes to a customer). After discussing how to do this, we got approval from our boss and are going forward with the work.

I’ve got the first step (copying the code from one area under Perforce to a new area under Perforce), which hopefully won’t take forever. So I should still be able to make my evening plans (karate class at 6:40).

I’d be more annoyed at this, except the engineer who actually has to submit the fix is in Madrid, where it is already almost Midnight.

Perl and music silliness

For some time, probably over two years, I’ve kept a backup of my iTunes library on my Linux box — both as a backup, especially of purchased and downloaded contents, and to make it accessible to Tara’s machine when mine isn’t up.

To do this I wrote a Perl program that I manually run when I’ve made updates to my music. The way it used to work was that it would compare the files on my Windoze box with the backup on my Linux box, and if the Windows version was newer, or if there was only a version on Windows, it would copy it to my Linux box. I used Perl’s fileinfo function to check which file was more recently modified.

Orlando Trip — Part 2

Now that I’ve gotten back, and gotten caught up on work and school, I’ve got time and energy to write up the rest of our trip. I added a couple of photos to the report on the first part, if anyone wants to take a look.
